R v Singh [2023] NZDC 9359

The defendant appeared for sentence on charges of unlawful possession of firearms (representative), possession of ammunition (representative), possession of sawn-off firearms, possession of methamphetamine for supply, possession of cannabis plant for supply, cultivation of cannabis plant, receiving, and attempting to pervert the course of justice. He had organised a group of other people to purchase a large quantity of firearms and ammunition. The guns were then modified by being cut down, and on-sold to gangs who used them for criminal purposes. When police began to investigate, the defendant instructed the people who had bought the guns to lie about their reasons for doing so. Police later searched the defendant's home and storage facilities and found drugs, illegal weapons and stolen goods. The Court reached an initial start point for sentence of 11 years six months. This was uplifted by a year for prior offending. The defendant got discounts for guilty plea and for prospects of rehabilitation, for a final sentence of six years six months. There was a minimum period of imprisonment of one year nine months on the firearms charges. Judgment Date: 12 May 2023
