The “Te Ao Mārama – Enhancing Justice for All” vision imagines a journey towards a better place (the world of light) by ensuring that all people who come to the District Court can seek justice and be seen, heard, understood and meaningfully participate.
The Te Ao Mārama vision is the District Court’s response to the longstanding calls for change to the justice system. This initiative is intended to build on the hard work, commitment and professionalism of all District Court Judges over many decades.
Te Ao Mārama is intended to be inclusive of all cultures and ethnicities and seeks to recognise that modern day Aotearoa New Zealand is a vibrant multi-cultural society with two founding cultures bound together in a spirit of partnership under the Treaty of Waitangi. Ultimately, it is intended to help promote safer communities and thereby help make Aotearoa New Zealand a better place to live in.
