The defendant appeared for sentencing on a charge of obtaining a benefit by knowingly dealing in paua in an unauthorised way. A search of her home by fisheries officers had revealed 422 paua (weighing 51 kg) in her freezers. The defendant admitted to buying the paua illegally from an acquaintance who was not licensed to sell them. The savings that the defendant received as a result of the illegal purchases was around $4500. The defendant was of otherwise good character and had cooperated with the investigation. The Court imposed a sentence of four months' community detention and 100 hours' community work. Judgment date: 18 April 2018.
