Sentencing — strangulation — assault with intent to injure — threatening to kill — intentional damage — domestic violence — Akland v Police [2019] NZHC 312. The defendant appeared for sentence on charges of strangulation, assault with intent to injure, threatening to kill and intentional damage. The victim was his partner, who he had trapped inside the house for several hours during the offending. Aggravating features included strangulation in the context of a domestic relationship, threats to kill, and causing the victim to lose consciousness. The Court set a start point of three years six months on the lead offence, and uplifted this by three months for the rest of the offending and another five months for previous offending. The final sentence was four years three months' imprisonment. Judgment Date: 18 June 2019.
