Sentencing — burglary — unlawful taking of a motor vehicle — assault with a weapon — ram raid burglary — Tuifua v Police [2015] NZHC 2426. The defendant and another burgled a number of commercial premises in Hamilton and Auckland. A stolen vehicle was used in respect of some burglaries to ram-raid the premises. In respect of one burglary, the defendant wielded a crowbar at a security guard. The court accepted that the weapon was not used to strike the security guard. The defendant was described as a recidivist and dishonest offender. The defendant was given a small discount for remorse. The defendant was sentenced to a total term of imprisonment of four years and two months, and reparation of $4,892.82. Judgment Date: 19 May 2017.
